FM Acquires FortressFire to Expand Property-Level Wildfire Risk Intelligence

The commercial property insurer says the acquisition will combine FortressFire’s wildfire modeling technology with FM’s engineering and research capabilities to help clients better assess and mitigate wildfire exposure.

Commercial property insurer FM has acquired FortressFire, a wildfire intelligence company specializing in property-level risk assessment and mitigation. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. FM announced the deal on August 10, 2026, with the acquisition subsequently reported by insurance industry publications.

FortressFire will remain an independent, wholly owned division of FM and will continue operating under its existing brand and leadership. The company serves insurers, reinsurers, brokers, real estate professionals, lenders and property owners with tools designed to identify and reduce wildfire exposure.

At the centre of FortressFire’s offering is a combination of machine learning and physics-based modeling. Rather than focusing solely on the likelihood of a wildfire occurring in a particular area, its technology is designed to examine the vulnerability of individual structures and assess the factors that could lead to ignition. Its services include aerial wildfire reporting, monitoring, analytics, ground inspections and mitigation assessments. The company’s approach is intended to translate detailed property-level information into specific recommendations that can be implemented and subsequently monitored.

The acquisition strengthens an area that is becoming increasingly important for commercial insurers as wildfire exposure grows across multiple regions. For property owners, understanding geographic wildfire exposure is only one part of the challenge; insurers also need better information about how buildings and surrounding conditions may influence the likelihood and severity of a loss.

FM said the combination will bring FortressFire’s structure-specific intelligence together with its own engineering expertise, scientific research capabilities and financial resources. The insurer has built its business around property loss prevention and engineering-based risk management over nearly two centuries.

Malcolm Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of FM, said the two organizations share a focus on using data and location-specific risk information to improve wildfire protection and resilience.

FortressFire founder, chairman and CEO Michael Ashker said the transaction reflects the company’s emphasis on science-based risk management and preventing wildfire ignition. The company describes its methodology as combining fire physics, thermodynamics, fire-behaviour modeling and structure-fuel analysis.

FortressFire’s platform, known as AMP – Assess, Mitigate, Monitor, Protect – is designed to provide structure-specific vulnerability analysis, mitigation guidance, inspections and continuing monitoring. According to FM, these capabilities can help insurers improve underwriting precision while giving property owners clearer steps for reducing their exposure.

The deal also reflects a broader shift in insurance toward more granular catastrophe-risk information. As insurers contend with increasingly complex wildfire exposures, property-level data can provide a more detailed picture of risk than regional hazard assessments alone.

FM said FortressFire will continue serving the wider market following the acquisition, rather than becoming exclusively an internal FM technology platform. That structure allows the business to maintain relationships across the insurance and property sectors while benefiting from FM’s engineering and research infrastructure.

For insurers, the potential value lies in connecting risk information with practical mitigation. For property owners, more detailed assessments could help identify vulnerabilities before a wildfire causes a loss and provide a framework for tracking whether protective measures are effective.

The acquisition therefore represents more than an expansion of FM’s technology capabilities. It adds a specialized wildfire-risk business to an insurer whose broader strategy is built around preventing property losses through engineering, scientific research and risk improvement.
