SEC Appoints First Chief AI Officer, Launches Task Force to Drive AI Integration

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Task Force to accelerate the integration of AI across its operations. Valerie Szczepanik, formerly the head of the SEC’s Strategic Hub for Innovation and Financial Technology (FinHub), has been appointed as the agency’s inaugural Chief AI Officer to lead this initiative.

The task force aims to centralize and coordinate AI-related efforts within the agency, fostering collaboration across departments and disciplines. Its mandate includes developing AI-driven tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and innovation, while ensuring robust governance and responsible AI use.

SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins emphasized that the initiative will “empower staff with AI-enabled systems,” aligning with the agency’s broader mission to safeguard investors, ensure fair markets, and support capital formation through technological advancement.
