In a landmark announcement, U.S. Bancorp has appointed Gunjan Kedia as its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO), making her the first female CEO in the company’s history. Currently serving as President, Kedia will officially assume leadership on April 15, 2025, succeeding Andy Cecere, who has led the financial institution as CEO since 2017 and as Chairman since 2018.
With this transition, Kedia also joins the U.S. Bancorp Board of Directors, reinforcing her role in shaping the future of the financial services giant. Her appointment places her among the few female leaders in global finance, underscoring a continued push for diversity at the highest levels of banking and financial leadership.
Kedia, a highly regarded executive, joined U.S. Bancorp in 2016 and has held senior leadership positions at State Street Financial, BNY Mellon, McKinsey & Company, and PwC. She holds engineering degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and Delhi School of Engineering and serves on the boards of PBS, the American Red Cross, and Carnegie Mellon Business School.
In response to her appointment, Kedia stated:
“U.S. Bancorp is a truly special place that allows us to do meaningful work and build lasting relationships with millions of clients who are navigating some of the most important moments in their lives and organizational journeys. I am deeply honored to be trusted to lead this iconic company, and I am thankful to Andy for his leadership and his stewardship of our organization. We will build on a solid foundation of integrity and doing business the right way to drive growth. These values will continue to guide us toward an ambitious future—one we will build together.”
Following Kedia’s appointment, Cecere will step back to serve as Executive Chairman, ensuring a smooth transition. With nearly 40 years at U.S. Bancorp, Cecere has played a pivotal role in the bank’s strategic growth and digital transformation. He expressed confidence in Kedia’s ability to lead, stating:
“Gunjan is an influential executive who understands our business, is skilled in strategic execution, and is driven to help the organization perform at its best. She is a terrific leader who is poised to confidently guide U.S. Bancorp into the future in partnership with an experienced leadership team and 70,000 dedicated employees.”
The leadership transition will take effect on April 15, 2025, with Cecere and Kedia working closely over the next three months to ensure a seamless handover.
Kedia’s appointment reflects U.S. Bancorp’s commitment to leadership excellence, diversity, and innovation in the financial sector. As one of the largest banks in the United States, U.S. Bancorp continues to strengthen its market position while prioritizing customer-centric strategies, digital transformation, and sustainable growth under its new leadership.
