UPI Transactions Surge to Record ₹27.28 Lakh Crore in October, Driven by Festive Spending

India’s flagship digital payments platform, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), achieved a record transaction value of ₹27.28 lakh crore in October 2025, marking a 16% year-on-year growth, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The platform also processed an all-time high of 20.7 billion transactions in volume terms during the festive month.

The surge in transactions was attributed to festive season spending, underscoring the increasing adoption of digital payments across India. The previous record stood at ₹25.14 lakh crore (May) in value and 19.47 billion (July) in volume.

On a month-on-month basis, UPI transactions grew 9.5% in value, rising from ₹24.9 lakh crore in September, with an average of 668 million transactions per day valued at around ₹87,993 crore daily.

Industry experts highlighted UPI’s resilience and scalability, even during peak transaction periods such as Diwali.

“The steady rise in UPI volumes, particularly during high-traffic periods like Diwali, demonstrates the strength of India’s digital infrastructure and how digital payments have become an integral part of daily life across urban and rural India,” said Dilip Modi, CEO of Spice Money.

Currently, UPI accounts for nearly 85% of all digital transactions in India and represents about 50% of global real-time digital payments, reinforcing its status as the world’s largest instant payments ecosystem.

UPI’s global footprint continues to expand — it is now live in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. Its launch in France marked UPI’s first entry into Europe, enabling Indian travellers to make seamless, real-time payments abroad.

Managed by NPCI, an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), UPI has become a cornerstone of India’s digital economy, offering real-time peer-to-peer and merchant payments across the country and beyond.
