RBC Deploys Proprietary AI Model ‘Atom’ to Revolutionize Credit and Loyalty Programs

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has launched a proprietary AI foundation model, Atom (Asynchronous Temporal Model), developed by its Borealis AI research unit, to enhance credit adjudication and personalize its Avion Rewards loyalty program. Trained on billions of client transactions, Atom integrates deep financial expertise to improve decision-making processes and customer engagement.

The AI model is already delivering measurable benefits—streamlining credit adjudication with more accuracy and inclusivity, especially for newcomers lacking traditional credit histories. In parallel, Atom is optimizing loyalty program personalization, leading to improved redemption rates and reduced operational costs.

This AI-driven transformation is a key part of RBC’s broader goal to unlock $700 million to $1 billion in enterprise value from AI by 2027. RBC executives emphasize Atom’s role in shaping the future of banking by enabling granular personalization and deeper client understanding.
