BHIM App Sees 91% Surge in UPI Transactions Amid UI Overhaul and Fresh Push by NPCI

New Delhi, July 3, 2025 — BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money), the government-backed UPI app developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has witnessed a significant rebound in user activity, nearly doubling its monthly transactions to approximately 70 million in June. The app’s resurgence follows years of stagnation and a concerted effort by NPCI to revamp and relaunch the platform with improved user experience and aggressive promotional strategies.

From processing an average of 25 million monthly transactions between January 2022 and June 2024, BHIM clocked 64.6 million transactions in May—up 91% from 33.8 million in January. Early estimates indicate it reached 70–75 million transactions in June.

This recovery comes after a complete overhaul of the app’s user interface and a substantial marketing budget, with NPCI reportedly allocating ₹150–200 crore in the current fiscal year to promote BHIM. Sources close to the matter noted that these efforts are yielding results, with users increasingly returning to the app.

Despite the progress, BHIM still holds a small slice of India’s UPI ecosystem—accounting for less than 1% of total UPI transaction volumes in June, when the platform processed a record 18.4 billion transactions overall. However, in terms of transaction value, BHIM has outpaced some competitors. In May, it processed ₹11,243 crore in payments, ahead of Amazon Pay’s ₹10,000 crore.

As NPCI continues its push to boost BHIM’s market share, the app’s recent momentum suggests a renewed relevance in the highly competitive UPI ecosystem.
